Oliver Randall New, age 89, of Corydon, passed away on July 28, 2019 at the Wayne County Hospital.
Oliver was born on July 14, 1930 to Chester and Mary New, living his childhood at the Millerton Depot. Oliver served in the Korean War and was awarded a purple heart. He married the love of his life Elberta Ellen Fortune on February 14, 1953 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. To this union two children were born: Randy New of Des Moines, Iowa and Janice Shelton of Indianola, Iowa.
Oliver worked for GW Thomas, Bud Davis and D&E Implement hauling farm equipment and Iowa Breeders Association. He also worked for Wayne County as a custodian at the courthouse, and for the county in the secondary roads department, driving heavy machines. He retired at the age of 62. After retirement he tried his hand at raising cattle. They purchased two farms in the Promise City area and raised cattle and baled hay until Elberta’s health declined.
Oliver enjoyed the special times with his grandchildren on the farm introducing them to the farm animals; making most of them pets, teaching them to ride the four-wheeler and fishing. He also had a special place in his heart for his great grandchildren: Brooke and Jake.
Survivors include his wife Elberta, children: Randy New and Janice (Bob) Shelton; grandchildren: Jonathan Shelton and Amy Preas, Lori (Adam) Troyer; great-grandchildren: Brooke and Jake Troyer; brothers: Richard (Linda) New, Robert (Karen) New; sister-in-law Marli New, plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Mary New, and brothers: Howard and Roy.
Oliver will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Graveside service was held Aug. 1, 2019 at Promise City Cemetery with Pastor Leroy Perkins officiating.
