John Harry Rider


John Harry Rider, son of John Wilbur Rider and Clara Evelyn (Smith) Rider was born August 30, 1931 at his mother’s parent’s home, Dr. Harry T. Smith and Carrie Maie (Finley) Smith in Humeston, Iowa. On March 18, 2019, he passed from this life at the Wayne County Hospital at the age of 87.

John received his education in Corydon and graduated from Corydon High School in 1949, of which he was class president. He then attended Drake University one year before his mother passed away in June of 1950. On June 6, 1954, John married LaGreta Sandra Syferd, daughter of Earl and Bertha (Liggett) Syferd of Sewal. To this union three children were born: Johnny, Todd and Missy.

He began working with C.L. Clark at the Abstract of Title Office and upon Clark’s death in 1958 he took over that business and added real estate to the office in 1960. In 1994 he retired from abstracting but continued the real estate and his used car business that was started in the late 1980s.

He was baptized and was a member of the First Christian Church and his belief remained strong throughout his life.

While serving as Mayor of Corydon, he had already opened Rider’s Dress Shop which was operated by his wife in 1964; was on the podium with President Richard M. Nixon at the Rathbun Lake dedication; oversaw the upgrading of numerous streets in Corydon, paving several; added a new addition to the town of Corydon; had a hand in opening the first city pool in Corydon; built several new houses and was awarded a soil conservation award on a farm he and his father owned.

John and Sandra took their children on a family vacation each year and also took a trip themselves yearly. John enjoyed going fishing in Canada with his friends.

His greatest passions were antique cars and going to see his children’s activities and then later his grandchildren’s activities.

He is survived by his wife, LaGreta Sandra Rider of Corydon; children: Johnny of Corydon; Todd and Dian (Darrah) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Missy and Gary Lain of Corydon; grandchildren: Shawn and Ryan Rider, Ashley and Justin Schoolcraft, Hannah and Tanner Kelly and Dillon Lain and Dally (Veach); great-granddaughter Kambrie Schoolcraft; sister, Janice Donaldson; niece Cynthia Donaldson; and sister-in-law Ellowein Gates and numerous extended family members and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents John Wilbur and Clara Evelyn (Smith) Rider; grandparents Dr. Harry T. and Carrie Maie Smith; grandparents William and Nancy Ann Rider; in-laws Earl and Bertha (Liggett) Syferd, uncle and aunt Mel and Erma (Smith) Latham; aunt Ardella (Rider) Sherburne; sister-in-law Dona Whittlesey; brothers-in-law: Scott Syferd, Drexal Syferd and Terry Syferd: and nephew Jackie Donaldson.

Funeral services were held March 22, 2019 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon with burial in the Corydon Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Shawn Rider, Ryan Rider, Dillon Lain, Justin Schoolcraft, Tanner Kelly and Lance Syferd. Honorary Pallbearers were: Verle Norris, Allen Fry, Tom Petty, Jimmy DeVore, Larry Gillman, Randy Searby, Rodney Parham and David Whittlesey.

Memorials may be made to Every Step Hospice or to the Corydon Chamber of Commerce Lighting Project.
