Leila Niday passed away on January 25, 2019, at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa. She was born on April 29, 1918, to Calla and Glenn Riggs, the second of five girls. She graduated from Seymour High School and then attended college in Kirksville, Missouri. She taught in country schools in the Seymour area, Knoxville Elementary School, and Corydon Elementary School.

She married Ervin Niday on August 26, 1944, in Centerville, Iowa. Two daughters were born: Nancy and Donna. The family farmed west of Seymour, and Leila made many dinners for hired hands.

Leila enjoyed doing embroidery and cross-stitch and created many quilts for family members or church auctions. She also enjoyed reading, especially autobiographies, biographies, historical fiction, and novels. She was a founder and president of a local rural women’s group called Busy Stitchers and enjoyed the close community of friends.

Attending church was one of the joys of Leila’s life. During most of her life she was a member of Sewal United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. In later years, she attended the Seymour United Methodist Church and the Sewal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ervin (1992), her sister Eleanor, and her sister Lucile. Remembering her are her family members: daughters Nancy (and husband Ronnie) Roberts of rural Seymour and Donna Niday of Ames; grandchildren Jason (and wife Emilie) Roberts of Quincy, Massachusetts, and Chris (and wife Rebecca) Roberts of rural Allerton; and great-grandchildren Joella (and husband Kole) Foster of Fairfield, California; Hudson Roberts of Allerton; and Theodore Roberts of Quincy, Massachusetts.

Funeral services and visitation were Feb. 2, 2019, at Thomas Funeral Home in Seymour. Interment followed at Shriver Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sewal Community Center or to Prairie Trails Historical Museum of Wayne County in Corydon.
