Warriorettes secure Bluegrass Conference title in decisive fashion

Seymour moves to 19-0 with wins over Mormon Trail, Lamoni and Diagonal

In Moravia on Saturday night, the Seymour girls beat Diagonal to win the Bluegrass Conference Tournament. The Warriorettes moved to 19-0 and also clinched the regular season title.

The Warriorettes led by only 5 at halftime, but came back to hold Diagonal to 10 points in the 2nd half, winning 57-38

“It was a great game and it is the first time we have won the conference tournament,” said head coach Paul Hinners. “We have been 2nd, but never won it until this year.

“I thought the girls played a very good 2nd half. We took care of the ball better and did a better job on defense, and rebounding was improved from the first half also. I felt we took control of the 2nd half right from the start of the 3rd quarter and never let up. The girls played hard.”

Acey Jellison led Seymour with 18 points and 17 rebounds, adding 2 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal. Katie George had a team-high 3 blocks off the bench, adding 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

Hannah Hinners had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Payton Jellison had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block and 1 assist. Riley Jewett had 6 points, led Seymour with 7 assists and 4 steals, and grabbed 2 rebounds. Nadia Howell had 2 assists and 1 rebound. Megan Levis had 1 rebound and 1 assist. Ali Enright had 1 steal.

In the second round of a 61-26 win over Lamoni, Acey Jellison led Seymour with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks, adding 1 assist. Jewett had 8 points, 5 assists, 5 steals and 3 rebounds. Payton Jellison had 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. Howell had 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Hinners had 2 points, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound.

Off the bench, George had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Enright had 10 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Thayda Houser had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Kaitlyn Couchman had 2 points and 1 steal. Franchesca DeVore had 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Levis and Harley Trimble each had 2 rebounds. Natalie Watters had 1 steal.

In the first round, Enright led Seymour with 15 points, 12 rebounds, adding 3 steals, 1 assist and 1 block in an 84-33 win over Mormon Trail. Thayda Houser also reached double figures off the bench, with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Jewett had 12 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Acey Jellison scored 11 points with 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal. Hinners had 9 points 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 steal. Howell had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Payton Jellison had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

Kaitlyn Couchman was 3 for 3 from the field with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. Franchesca DeVore had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Natalie Watters grabbed 4 rebounds with 1 assist. Paige Hackathorn had 1 point and 1 steal. Harley Trimble had 2 steals and 1 rebound.
